Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 11)  — President Rodrigo Duterte said he would not allow his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio to run for President, if he will have his way.

"Kung ako tatanungin mo hindi ako papayag na tatakbo siya [If you ask me, I won't allow her to run]," Duterte said during the campaign of his political party's senatorial slate in Bacolod Thursday.

"I will advise her to lay off. Pero if I know Inday, hindi 'yan tatakbo ng Presidente. Wise masyado 'yan si Inday. She just wants to shake the tree," he explained.

[Translation: I will advise her to lay off. But if I know Inday, she won't run for President. Inday is too wise. She just wants to shake the tree.]

Duterte made the comment amid persistent speculation his daughter may seek to succeed him.

The Davao mayor has put up the regional coalition party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) and has been campaigning nationwide for its 13 senatorial candidates.

Reports previously quoted the presidential daughter as saying she will make a decision on her presidential bid by 2021. But there has been speculation that by organizing Hugpong and its network of allies, she has been laying the groundwork for a presidential run.
