Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 11) — President Rodrigo Duterte told the army and police to shoot and kill candidates who refuse to surrender their high-powered firearms.

Patayin mo. Kasi lumalaban eh. That’s defiance,” Duterte said in a speech during the last campaign sortie of his party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) on Saturday.

[Translation: If you have an M16, M14 firearm, if the police and the military tells you to surrender it, surrender it. If you do not follow that, I’m telling the police and the military to kill you. Kill them. Because they’re resisting. That’s defiance.]

Duterte added, “How can you arrest a person who does not want to surrender? Eh ‘di patayin mo. [Just kill them.]”

In two raids days before the elections on Monday, authorities recovered from two mayoralty bets in Caraga region a grenade, high-powered firearms and ammunition from their homes.

Among them is San Francisco, Surigao del Norte Mayor Guia Plaza-Sabanal, who is running for reelection under PDP-Laban.

Aside from a fragmentation grenade, an unregistered .38 caliber revolver and ammunition, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group operatives also found Friday in Plaza-Sabanal’s home P5.9 million in cash along with sample ballots.
