Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 12) — President Rodrigo Duterte led Independence Day celebration with the military at the 6th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Malabang, Lanao del Sur.

Initially scheduled to arrive at 2 p.m. for a flag raising ceremony, Duterte arrived past 5, when the flag had already been put away and it was raining.

In his speech, Duterte said that he chose to mark the day in Lanao del Sur because it is where former Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos was executed for refusing to cooperate with the Japanese during World War II.

The President also talked about the Bangsamoro Organic Law and told the Moros to take advantage of the rich natural resources in Mindanao.

Last year, Duterte celebrated Independence Day in Kawit, Cavite, where protesters were able to disrupt the program.
