Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 21) — A steel bar from a portion of the Skyway extension project crashed onto passing vehicles Saturday morning in Muntinlupa City, leaving a motorcycle rider dead and at least six others injured.

EEI Corporation, the construction company in the Skyway Stage 3 project, said in a statement that a crane being positioned "tilted and fell" on the steel girder, which crushed vehicles below it.

The incident happened along East Service Road in Barangay Cupang around 8:50 a.m., the Southern Police District said. Seven vehicles were damaged, including a taxi, van, SUV, and four motorcycles, which were traversing northbound, Muntinlupa police said.

At least seven victims were rushed to the hospital but one of the motorcycle riders was pronounced dead on arrival.

"We are monitoring the progress of the injured and are trying to get in touch with their next of kin for proper coordination and to extend any assistance they may need," the EEI said, noting that the victims were all rushed to the hospital by ambulances from its firm and the Skyway O&M Corp.

It said it immediately cleared the area to restore the flow of traffic.

The company also committed to review safety and operating protocols to prevent any further incident.

San Miguel Corporation assured the public there will be a thorough investigation and the victims and their families will be assisted.

It said the incident delays the completion of the Skyway Stage 3 project, which was initially set by yearend.

"After initial assessment, this unfortunate incident sets back the completion of the Skyway Extension Project. From the December 2020 deadline, target completion is now February 2021," SMC said in a separate statement.
