Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 3) - For the first time since September 2014, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) is now running at 50 kilometers per hour starting yesterday, Nov. 2.

The Department of Transportation said on Tuesday that the improvement with the train speed is due the installation of new long-welded rails in all MRT-3 stations as part of the rehabilitation program.

“With the increased operating speed, MRT-3 passengers can now expect faster travel time, shorter waiting time for train arrivals, and better and comfortable riding experience,” said MRT-3 Director for Operations Michael J. Capati in a statement.

With this development, passengers will only have to wait four to five minutes to get a ride.

DOTr said that travel time from North Avenue Station to Taft Avenue Station will be lessened from one hour and 15 minutes to just one hour and five minutes.

MRT-3 has been gradually increasing the operating speed. Last October, the speed was hiked from 30 kph to 40 kph. DOTr said that it is aiming to increase the speed of MRT to 60 kph by December.
