Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 22) — A young cardiologist who contracted COVID-19 died “while fulfilling his duties as a doctor,” the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) announced on Saturday.

“It is a sad day for the whole association as we have lost one of our own in the fight against COVID. He is a casualty of this war,” PHA said in a Facebook post.

"We lost a young, brilliant, promising doctor in this battle. You are our hero!" it added.

Meanwhile, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila also announced on Saturday the passing of an alumnus “who chose to serve the country but lost his life in the fight against COVID-19.”

“He was a scholar whose humble beginnings guided his future. He was doctor to the barrio and a hero,” the post read. It is not yet clear if the PHA member and the PLM alumnus are the same person.

PHA asked for prayers for all medical personnel in the frontlines and all those afflicted by the viral disease.

The Philippines has so far reported 380 cases of COVID-19, with 25 fatalities, as of March 22. Health authorities urge the public to regularly exercise preventive measures against the viral disease, such as washing hands frequently, maintaining social distance, avoiding touching the eyes, nose and mouth, and covering the mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing.
