Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 8) — The Department of Education is suspending all scheduled national and regional events involving students from different localities until further notice after the Department of Health confirmed the first two cases of local transmission of the new coronavirus in the country.

However, DepEd said the National Festival of Talents and the National Schools Press Conference will still push through as the participants are already at the venues of these events.

“Heightened precautions are being implemented … which include foregoing elements of the programs that can be avoided,” it said.

The DepEd said it is waiting for advice from the inter-agency task force on emerging diseases on its other activities, including the Palarong Pambansa which for now still pushes through.

The DepEd earlier moved national events scheduled on February to a later date, due to the threat of the new coronavirus, which causes coronavirus disease, formally known as COVID-19.

There is no word yet from the DepEd whether it will decide to suspend classes due to the virus, which has infected six and killed one in the country.
