Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 4) — The number of Filipinos infected with coronavirus abroad has risen to 517, as the Department of Foreign Affairs announced 51 more cases on Saturday.

Twenty-two more people have died from the viral disease, bringing the total number of fatalities among overseas Filipinos to 43.

A total of 131 Filipinos abroad have recovered from COVID-19.

The DFA said most of these cases – 215 – were reported in the Asia Pacific region, 182 in Europe, 68 in the US, and 52 in the Middle East and Africa.

Worldwide, COVID-19 has killed more than 59,000 people, mostly in Italy, although the outbreak began in Wuhan, China in December 2019. More than 1.1 million people have been infected, according to the Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 global tracker.

In the Philippines, 3,094 people have contracted coronavirus, with 144 deaths and 57 recoveries.

To prevent the spread of the virus, authorities are urging people to practice regular hand washing, cover their mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and avoid close contact with those who exhibit virus symptoms.
