Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 26) — Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Emeritus Oscar Cruz passed away due to complications from COVID-19, said his successor Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

“Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz, archbishop emeritus of Lingayen Dagupan, died in the grace of the Lord today August 26, 2020 at 6:45 in the morning, due to multi-organ failure caused by critical COVID-19 infection, at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City,” said Villegas in a statement.

The news service of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines first reported that Cruz died due to a “lingering illness.”

The prelate was 85.

Cruz led the CBCP from 1995 to 1999.

He has criticized abuses within the Catholic Church and crusaded against illegal numbers game jueteng.
