Magnitude 4.3 quake jolts Canaman, Camarines Sur

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 15) — A magnitude 4.3 earthquake hit Canaman, Camarines Sur on Thursday night, state seismologists said.

In a bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was felt at 10:08 p.m. at a depth of one kilometer. It was tectonic in origin, which means there was a movement in the Earth's crust.

Initial reports said it was a magnitude 4.2 earthquake.

Damage to structures is expected, Phivolcs said.

Following this tremor, a series of quakes were felt in the same location but the agency did not specify if these were aftershocks.

Intensity VI, or very strong shaking, was felt in Pili, Camarines Sur

Intensity V, characterized by strong vibration, was felt in Sipocot, Camarines Sur

Intensity III, or weak shaking, was felt in Iriga City, Camarines Sur

Intensity II, or slightly felt shaking, occurred in Legazpi City, Albay

Intensity I, or scarcely perceptible shaking, was felt in Mercedes, Camarines Norte

Phivolcs also reported intensities felt in other areas:

Intensity V - Canaman, Camarines Sur

Intensity IV - Calabanga, Camaligan, Gainza, Ocampo, Pili, and Sipocot, Camarines Sur

Intensity III - City of Naga

Intensity II - Buhi, Camarines Sur

Local authorities said they are continuously monitoring and are assessing the situation on the ground.
