Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 29) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said that running for vice president in the 2022 elections is not a bad idea, and that he may do so if there is space for him.

“It’s not at all a bad idea, and if there is space for me there siguro pero kung wala akong (maybe, but if there is no) space [for me] and everybody is crowding up wanting to be one, vice president, sila na lang muna kasi tapos na ako (I'll just allow them since I am done already),” he said during his weekly address.

He also noted that there are things he would like to continue but did not specify what those are. He said this will be dependent on the presidential candidate he will support in the upcoming polls.

Earlier, Duterte resisted the call of his PDP-Laban party for him to run for vice president in the 2022 polls, saying that he is ready for retirement. However, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque clarified this does not mean yet that he is rejecting their call.

The chief executive also said that while it is a good idea, he said he will not vie for the second highest post in the country if House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez does the same.

Duterte is known for flip-flopping on his statements. In 2015, he repeatedly said he will not join the presidential race, but he filed his candidacy at the last minute and eventually won the 2016 election.
