Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 1) - After hemming and hawing over the past weeks over the possibility of his bid for the vice presidency after his six-term as president ends next year, President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday told the public to now "consider" him for the position “to maintain equilibrium.”

“Maybe at this time you can say that, maybe para to maintain the equilibrium sa lahat (maybe to maintain the equilibrium for all), consider me a candidate for the vice-presidency at this time,” he said on Thursday.

But he quickly added that his announced bid is to avoid being a "lame duck" president in the last year of his term.

“You would know what is a lame duck.... Posturing ‘yan, political posturing so they would not treat you badly, kasi paalis na ako,” said Duterte.

[Translation: You would know what is a lame duck.... That is posturing, political posturing so they would not treat you badly, because I’m already leaving.]

The PDP-Laban adopted a resolution at a Duterte-endorsed conference last May urging the president to run for vice president in the 2022 general elections. For his part, Duterte earlier said that running for the said post is not a bad idea and he may do so if there’s a space for him.

Duterte even bared his plans if ever he makes a comeback next year and win.

“Ngayon kapag tumakbo ako ng vice president at manalo ako, kung hindi ko ka-alyado yung presidente, (If ever I run as vice president and win, if the president is not my ally) all I have to do is to join the military and the police in the fight against crime, drugs, criminality. And also, maybe go around the Asean countries for a more cohesive relation between them,” he said.
