Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 28)— The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) bombed a camp of communist rebels in Northern Samar over the weekend, destroying makeshift huts and resulting in "heavy casualties."

In a statement Monday, the AFP said its Joint Task Force STORM dropped 500-pound bombs in a surgical airstrike Sunday on about 50 members of the New People's Army (NPA) staying in the camp located in the hinterlands of Barangay Caputoan, Las Navas town. It said the troops recovered communication equipment, weapons, food and medical supplies as well as subversive documents from the area.

The rebels, led by Ceriaco Jerusalem or CADO, were allegedly conducting extortion activities in nearby communities.

"Bloodstains along the path of the fleeing rebels indicate the heavy casualties inflicted on the communist terrorists," it said.

Military troops are still searching for rebels who may have escaped the bombing.
