Magnitude 5.5 earthquake hits Surigao del Sur

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 13) — A magnitude 5.5 quake rocked Surigao del Sur Saturday morning, the impact of which was felt as far as Cagayan de Oro and Cebu cities.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the epicenter was tracked nine kilometers (km) east of Carrascal, about 73 km north of the capital Tandag City.

Speaking to CNN Philippines Saturday, Surigao del Sur Governor Alexander Pimentel said the most affected areas are the towns of Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen, Lanuza, and Cortes.

He said damage was reported on houses, a public market, a church, and a fire station..

Pimentel said 25 people with minor injuries were brought to the Madrid District Hospital.

Local disaster management officials ares assessing the situation to determine the kind of assistance, he added.

Pimentel said an aftershock was felt at around 5:15 a.m., and they are on alert should there be more tremors.

Photos shared on social media showed damage to the Madrid District Hospital, with cracks on a portion of its concrete facade cracked and on the ground.

Pictures also show some patients gathered at an empty space in front of the hospital, while others sat on benches outside the building.

Phivolcs said the quake was also felt in the following areas:

Intensity 6 - Carrascal, Cantilan, Carmen, Lanuza, and Madrid, Surigao Del Sur

Intensity 5 - Bayabas, and Cortes, Surigao Del Sur; Butuan City

Intensity 4 - Surigao City; Tandag City; Gingoog City; Claver, Surigao Del Norte; Magsaysay, Misamis Oriental; Talacogon, Agusan Del Sur; Gingoog City

Intensity 3 - Cagwait, Surigao Del Sur; Socorro, Surigao Del Norte; Balingasag, Balingoan, Jasaan, Salay, and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental; Pintuyan, San Francisco, and San Ricardo, Southern Leyte; Cagayan De Oro City

Intensity 2 - Mambajao, Camiguin; Cebu City; Borongan City

Intensity 1 - Bislig City; Cagayan de Oro City; Palo, Leyte

Phivolcs said it expects aftershocks and damage from the quake.
