Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 2) - An alleged Abu Sayyaf Group member was killed in a shootout with operatives from the Philippine National Police – Anti-Kidnapping Group (PNP-AKG) on early Wednesday at Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte.

Authorities identified the suspect as Jupuri Dais, also known as Jupuri Nabua, who was said to be involved in kidnapping activities since 2016. Police records showed that he was a member of an Abu Sayyaf sub-unit under a certain Almujir Yadah.

Dais is being hunted by the PNP-AKG for his alleged involvement in a series of kidnappings in Mindanao.

PNP-AKG Director Brig. Gen. Jonel Estomo said in a statement that the police team was about to serve the suspect a warrant of arrest for kidnapping and illegal detention, when the suspect fired shots.

Dais was armed with a cal.45 pistol, according to Estomo.

The police official added that the operation was able to thwart a possible kidnapping activity. He said Dais was in the area of Sibuco to abduct an engineer and a contractor.

The PNP said that the slain suspect was also a former member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front before he got involved with the Abu Sayyaf.
