Student in Sorsogon dies due to alleged frat hazing

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 18) — A 23-year-old student died allegedly during fraternity hazing rites in Sorsogon.

The Sorsogon Police Provincial Office identified the victim as Omer Despabiladeras, who underwent initiation rites of the TAU GAMMA PHI Fraternity Bulan Chapter last February 16.

Initial investigation showed that the hazing rites took place between 10 am to 4 pm at Sitio Banase, Brgy. San Vicente in Bulan town.

The victim suddenly collapsed and was brought by a certain Rembrandt Gerolao and Ulysis Berania to the Pantaleon Gotladera Memorial Hospital. However, he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

A nurse from the hospital reported the incident to the local police.

Despabiladeras had hematoma on his legs, back and other parts of his body.

While an investigation is still ongoing, the Bulan Municipal Police Station requested for an autopsy of the victim’s body. Meanwhile, Gerolao and Berania are now under the custody of the police.
