Cebu City (CNN Philippines, April 22)— Cebu City has recorded a surge in COVID-19 infections, with 139 new cases reported Wednesday, according to Mayor Edgar Labella. This brings the total number of COVID-19 patients in the city to 312.

The new cases include 123 inmates at the city jail facility in Barangay Kalunasan. The detention center, which houses around 6,000 inmates, recently underwent mass testing, Labella added.

Cebu City has reported 16 recoveries and six fatalities from the viral disease, with the latest death being a 47-year-old male inmate.

The entire Cebu province meanwhile listed 337 cases, with other patients reported in Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City.

Nationwide, the Philippines has recorded 6,599 cases of COVID-19, including 654 recoveries and 437 fatalities.
