5 houses partially damaged due to Occidental Mindoro quake

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 3) — Five houses sustained damage after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro early Sunday morning, a local disaster management agency said.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management of Sablayan reported the damage in a Facebook post on Saturday.

"May na-i-report sa aming opisina na limang bahay, mga residente ng Zone 5 Barangay San Agustin na nagtala nang kaunting mga pag-guho sa ilang parte ng kanilang mga tahanan," the post read.

[Translation: It was reported to our office that five houses in Zone 5 Barangay San Agustin recorded minor damage caused by mild erosion in their homes.]

In an earthquake bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at 5:59 a.m. at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was of tectonic origin, indicating a movement in the Earth's crust.

In a separate bulletin posted in the afternoon, Phivolcs downgraded the strength of the earthquake to magnitude 5.3.

Aftershocks and damage are expected, Phivolcs warned.

The following earthquake intensities were registered in these areas:

Intensity VI- Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity IV- Calintaan, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity III- Santa Cruz and Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity II- Magsaysay and Mamburao Occidental Mindoro; Pinamalayan, Bongabong, Socorro, San Teodoro, Gloria, Baco and Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro

The Phivolcs also noted the following instrumental intensities in certain affected areas:

Intensity III - San Jose, Occidental Mindoro

Intensity II - Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro; Batangas City

Intensity I - Mulanay and Mauban, Quezon; Tagaytay City
