Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 19) — Thirteen people died in Kalinga on Sunday after their vehicle fell into an irrigation canal, provincial authorities said.

In its official Facebook page, the Kalinga provincial government said a Ford Everest sports utility vehicle driven by Soy Lope Agtulao “accidentally fell and was submerged” in an irrigation canal at Brgy. Bulo, Tabuk City.

“Out of the 15 passengers, 13 died from drowning despite the efforts of our rescuers to revive them,” the post read.

Provincial authorities also noted that 12 of the victims were declared dead on arrival at the Mija Kim Medical Center in Brgy. Agbannawag. Meanwhile, the remaining three were rushed to the Kalinga Provincial Hospital where one of them had also been declared dead.

Among the dead are three children aged 3-5 years old.

“Provincial Governor Engr. Ferdinand B. Tubban instructed the PSWDO to see all possible assistance that may be given to the bereaved families,” added the Kalinga government.
