Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 22) — The Gilas Pilipinas men's team began its 2019 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup campaign on a sour note.

The national squad absorbed back-to-back losses in the opening day of the international basketball tournament in Changsha, China.

In its first game, the Philippines could not get its rhythm going as it began at an early six-point deficit against Thailand.

Sad development for Gilas as Ricci Rivero sprained his left ankle after landing awkwardly in an attempted drive to the basket with 2:59 remanining the match.

The Filipinos tried to make a comeback, but Thailand already established a safe distance to grab the 14-11 victory.

In the second game, a short-handed Gilas team battled a taller Qatar side.

It was a close contest as the Philippines stayed within two points in the first half of the game.

But with its height advantage, Qatar slowly pulled away to notch the win.

Gilas will next face Iran and Samoa on May 23.
