Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 22) — The Gilas Pilipinas women's team kicks off its 2019 FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup stint with huge victories in Changsha, China.

In its first match, the national squad punished Samoa by recording the biggest winning margin in the tournament's history, 21-1.

Gilas barely broke a sweat as it controlled the tempo of the entire contest.

Afril Bernardino led the charge for the Philippines with eight points.

Following a confidence-boosting win, the Filipina cagers outlasted Chinese Taipei in its second game, 16-13.

Trailing 6-4, Gilas turned things around and grabbed the edge en route to the win.

Jack Animam made his presence felt for the Philippines after scoring five markers.

Gilas will next face Vanuatu on May 23.
