Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 17) — The Philippine Azkals were drawn in Group A of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Asian qualifiers.

The Phillipines joined China, Syria, Maldives, and Guam after a draw ceremony was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday.

Ranked 126th in the world, the Philippines will have its hands full when it faces top-ranked China (73rd) and Syria (85th).

Meanwhile, the Azkals will have a better performance against Maldives and Guam, ranked 151st and 190th respectively, in international friendlies.

The top squads in each of the eight groups and the four best runners-up in all groups will advance to the third round of the World Cup qualifiers.

The group winners will also automatically qualify for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, while the four best runners-up will advance to the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers.

The second round of the World Cup qualifiers is slated to run from September 5 to June 9, 2020.
