Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 7) – Filipino pole vault sensation EJ Obiena jumped into his season-best clearance to cop the silver medal at the FBK Games on Sunday in Hengelo, The Netherlands.

The 25-year-old Obiena cleared 5.80 meters in his first attempt, enough for a second place finish. He attempted to clear the 5.86-meter mark but failed in his three tries.

Hometown bet Menno Vloon also cleared the 5.80-meter mark but did it in multiple attempts to settle for a bronze medal finish.

World record holder Armand Duplantis of Sweden topped the competition after hurdling the 6.10-meter clearance. He failed to beat his own world record when he tried to clear the 6.19-meter mark.

The Dutch meet is Obiena's second tournament this month, after his gold-medal finish at the Folksam Grand Prix in Gothenburg, Sweden last June 3.

Obiena is currently gearing up for his Olympic debut at Tokyo, Japan this July. He was the first Filipino to qualify for the quadrennial sporting event.
