Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 8) – Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala and her Russian partner Oksana Selekhmeteva advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 French Open girls’ doubles play on Tuesday.

The Eala-Selekhmeteva tandem dominated the duo of Belgium’s Sofia Costoulas and Finland’s Laura Hietaranta, 6-3, 6-1, in their second round match.

Eala and Selekhmeteva – the tournament’s top seed – displayed their dominance in the first set after winning a lot of first serve points at 90%.

In the second set, the Filipino-Russian pair asserted their mastery over their opponents by scoring 80% of their return of first serves.

The Eala-Selekhmeteva duo will next face the winner of the match between the tandem of Czech Republic’s Barbora Palicova and Canada’s Annabelle Xu and the fifth seed pair of Serbia’s Petra Marcinko and Hungary’s Natalia Szabanin.

On Monday night, Eala and Selekhmeteva defeated the pair of Belarus' Evialina Laskevich and Russia's Alina Shcherbinina, 6-4, 6-4, to open their campaign in the competition.

Before the prestigious Roland Garros tournament, the Eala-Selekhmeteva tandem debuted with a bridesmaid finish at the W25 Platja D'Aro meet in Spain last May 22. It was Eala's first doubles tournament in the professional tennis circuit.

Her doubles’ play campaign somehow eased Eala’s early elimination in the singles competition, where she got an upset loss against unseeded British bet Matilda Mutavdzic in the first round.

Eala is also a big name in the girls’ doubles circuit as she won the 2020 Australian Open title with Indonesian partner Priska Nugroho.
