Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 8) – Filipino gymnastics sensation Carlos Yulo scored a timely boost in his Tokyo Olympics preparations after scooping a bronze medal in the 2021 All Japan Apparatus Championships.

The 21-year-old Yulo scored 14.966 points to land a third place finish in the men's parallel bars event.

2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist Yusuke Tanaka and Kaito Sugimoto tied for the gold medal after they both received 15.400 points.

The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines lauded Yulo for his achievement. Yulo is currently based in Japan for his Olympic preparations.

"Great performance Caloy! We can't wait to see you defy the gravity in the Olympics!" the national federation said.

Yulo is the second Filipino athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Games after winning the gold medal in the 2019 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. He also won two golds and five silvers in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games held in Manila.
