Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 2) — Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena soared to world number five following his second place finish at the 2021 Paris Diamond League.

The 25-year-old athlete has now accumulated 1,361 points in the latest rankings released by World Athletics, the international governing body for the sport.

He is ranked behind world number one Armand Duplantis of Sweden, Americans Christopher Nilsen and Sam Kendricks, and Renaud Lavillenie of France.

Obiena was among the 19 Filipino athletes who competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He was previously ranked sixth in the world.

He broke the national record after clearing the 5.91-meter mark in the Paris Diamond League, smashing the Philippine record of 5.87 meters which he set in Poland last June. He finished second behind Duplantis, who cleared 6.01 meters, while Kendricks settled for third in the France meet.
