Reel Filipina: A CNN Philippines Digital Shorts Competition Mechanics

Reel Filipina, a Digital Shorts competition, is the first-ever film contest organized by CNN Philippines. As we celebrate Women's Month in March, we join the global call to promote gender equality by sharing the untold stories of women from all walks of life.

Who can join:

1. The competition is open to all individuals:
  1. Filipino, residing in the Philippines
  2. 18 years old and above

2. Employees of Nine Media Corporation, including their relatives up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity are disqualified from joining the contest.

Competition Guidelines:

1. Participants are allowed only one entry.

2. Participant agree to grant CNN Philippines the right without obligation, unless prohibited by law, to use the contents of the material they submit  without compensation, for the purpose of promotion, advertising and publicizing all matters related to the REEL FILIPINA DIGITAL SHORTS COMPETITION and CNN PHILIPPINES WOMEN’S MONTH CELEBRATION, in any medium (TV broadcast, print and digital), in perpetuity.

3. CNN Philippines reserves the right to disqualify entries which are not in line with the mechanics of the contest as well as company rules and regulations.


1. There will be two winners — one from the judges’ deliberation, referred as the REEL FILIPINA DIGITAL SHORTS COMPETITION WINNER and one from the online voting, referred as CNN Philippines’ REEL FILIPINA DIGITAL SHORTS COMPETITION PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD.

2. REEL FILIPINA DIGITAL SHORTS COMPETITION WINNER will receive Php 100,000.00 (subject to tax).

A. Technicalities – 50%
  1. Cinematography
  2. Sound
  3. Production design
  4. Editing
B. Messaging and Storyline – 50%
  1. Relevance to the theme
  2. Overall impact
3. The Winner of the REEL FILIPINA DIGITAL SHORTS COMPETITION PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD will receive Php 50,000.00 (subject to tax).

Entry Guidelines:

1. Film entries should revolve around this year’s International Women’s Month message: “An equal world is an enabled world”. Stories should tell how we, on our ways, can be part of the gender equality advocacy.

2. Each entry should have at least a total running time of two minutes, and not more than four minutes, including closing credits.

3. Use of any visual materials, script, storyline, scoring and other musical elements that are copyrighted will not be allowed. CNN Philippines will not be liable for any legal infringement or copyright violations.

4. Entries must be MPEG, MP4, MOV, or M2TS formats. Video size should be 1920 x 1080. Maximum file size is 2 GB.

5. Materials should be uploaded via and the download link will be required in the submission form.      

6. English subtitle is required.

7. Videos which have been previously published, recorded or released in any part of the world and those which have been commissioned by any third party shall not be eligible as entries. Appearance of participants’ name, school logo, name of university or any product/brand name as a material or content in the video is disallowed.

Screening of entries and online voting:

1. 10 entries, referred to as FINALISTS, will be shortlisted by a panel of esteemed judges. 

2. The finalists will be posted on on March 18, 12:01:01 PM.      

3. Official voting period will be from March 18 to March 23, 11:59:59PM at      

4. People’s Choice Award will be given to the film that will garner the most number of total votes.

Announcement of winners:

Official announcement of winner will be in the awarding ceremony to be held during the CNN Philippines 3rd Women’s Summit. Venue and other details will be provided. The Top 10 qualifiers are required to attend the awarding ceremony.
